is a program of international psychology (IUPsyS – International Union of Psychological
Science, IAAP-International Association
of Applied Psychology, and IACCP – International Association of Cross-Cultural
Psychology) to provide training opportunities for scholars from low-income
countries and to promote their attendance at international congresses of
psychology.
Contributions from these international associations and from
national associations and universities have enabled the following programme of seminars for 2008. |

SEMINAR #1 This workshop covers beginning to advanced topics in structural equation modeling (SEM), using the EQS 6.1 program. Each participant will receive a copy of EQS (with a time-limited license) and its documentation on CD. The intent of the course is to enable every participant, by the end of the workshop, to meaningfully design their own SEM study and to analyze their own SEM data, using the best available statistics for typical as well as nonstandard situations (nonnormality, hierarchical design, missing scores, outliers, etc.).
Topics (depending on participant interest) include both practical issues
(modeling with Diagrammer or text files) and
theoretical topics (use of recently published and in press statistics).
Typical models. Latent variables. Factor scores. Identification, estimation, testing,
interpretation. Model modification: z, LM, and Wald tests. Fit indices and
power. Mean structure models. Growth curve
models, and their automatic setup. Best practices with nonnormal
data: Satorra-Bentler tests and Yuan-Bentler residual-based statistics. Missing
data estimators, tests, and SE’s for normal (Jamshidian-Bentler) and
nonnormal (Yuan-Bentler) data. Kim-Bentler
tests of homogeneity of means and covariance
matrices. Correlation structure methods for normal and nonnormal data, and
categorical variables. Simulation, bootstrap and jacknife
methods. Case-weighting for complex samples and robust statistics
(Yuan-Bentler) for outliers and influential points. Multi-
sample/multi-group models. Multilevel models with ML (Bentler-Liang) and
robust tests and SEs (Yuan-Bentler); HLM approaches. Mixture models.
Internal consistency reliabilities: alpha, 1-factor, x-factor,
arbitrary model, maximal, dimension-free, greatest lower bound. APPLICATION
PROCEDURES: Applicants should submit the complete application form (see
below), an overview of their background and interests in the topic, and a
brief statement concerning the type of research that they have been
undertaking. Instruction and discussion will be in English, and participants
must be able to speak and understand the language. SUBMIT APPLICATION MATERIALS (DEADLINE MARCH 1, 2008) TO: |

SEMINAR #2 Judith

(the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational
Achievement), an international consortium of research organizations from
more than fifty countries with Headquarters in Amsterdam, has coordinated a series of studies of mathematics and science (TIMSS)
and of civic education and engagement (CIVED).

first day of the workshop will discuss the advantages and limitations of
the use of these data sources for research in educational and
developmental psychology and the specifics of the available data; ways in
which these data have been made relevant for the policy community will
also be discussed. The second day of the workshop will focus on the
development of specific research problems and strategies of analysis using
the IEA Civic Education data base (with hands-on experience in the
computer laboratories of Eleven
post-Communist countries and two Latin American countries tested students
in CIVED. Researchers from these regions are especially encouraged to
attend this seminar (see full list of countries and instrument on the
study’s website, http://wam.umd.edu/~iea).
Emerging researchers from all regions are also encouraged to attend
the seminar, as the growing difficulty of getting schools’ permission to
collect small scale data has become a serious challenge in many countries.
APPLICATION
PROCEDURES: Applicants should submit the complete application form (see
below), an overview of their background and interests in this topic, and a
brief statement concerning the type of research that they might wish to
present at the seminar. Participants must be able to speak and understand
English, the language of instruction and discussion SUBMIT

SEMINAR #3 Thomas
S. Weisner, Qualitative
and quantitative methods are both important in cross-cultural research in
psychology and human development. Integrating
qualitative with quantitative methods can increase the depth, breadth,
believability, and understanding of research.
Our workshop will provide examples of mixed method research that
achieve these goals, and work with participants to extend their existing
research designs, samples, and techniques to more effectively use a broad
range of qualitative methods that can be combined with quantitative data.
The workshop may cover data collection, analysis, study design and
sampling, the varieties of qualitative methods, qualitative analysis
software, epistemological questions, sustaining mixed methods research
teams and collaborations, grant submissions using qualitative and mixed
methods, and publishing such studies.
Participants should bring with them studies they have done, are
doing, or are considering for workshop discussion. APPLICATION
PROCEDURES: Applicants should submit the complete application form (see
below), an overview of their background and interests in this topic and in
cross-cultural psychology, and a brief statement concerning the type of
research that they might wish to present at the seminar. Participants must
be able to speak and understand English, the language of instruction and
discussion. SUBMIT
