Call for Nominations - IUPsyS Deputy Secretary-General

The International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS) calls for nominations for the position of Deputy Secretary-General for a 2-year appointment 2010-2012.

Duties of the Deputy Secretary-General
The Deputy Secretary-General of the Union (2010-12) will work with the Secretary-General, Treasurer and Executive Officer to carry out the principle administrative functions of the Union and to assist in representing the Union to National Members, Affiliates and External Organizations. The Deputy Secretary-General is a voting member of the Executive Committee and ex officio non-voting member of the Union's Assembly.

The primary duties will be to work with the Secretary-General (see here for a description of the duties of the Secretary-General) with executive and representational responsibilities. Particular tasks include participating in the preparation of the Executive Committee and the Assembly, attending inter-organizational meetings, representing the Union in national and international contexts, and participating in strategic planning and implementation. The Deputy Secretary-General will deputize for the Secretary-General when necessary, and will serve in liaison functions with external organizations. 

The Deputy Secretary-General position requires a time commitment of at least one day per week. The ideal Deputy Secretary-General should possess demonstrated executive and administrative skills in organizing and implementing programs, and policy-related experience, preferably in multiple international contexts, and must have excellent English writing skills. It is also desirable that the Deputy Secretary-General have access to institutional support in their usual work setting. The Officers of the Union receive a small budgetary allocation to defray costs associated with their duties.

The Officers of the Union function optimally as a virtual team, working in close collaboration with the Executive Committee. Patience, a sense of humor, and sound judgment are essential assets.

Nominations Procedure
Nominations are due by close of business, April 1, 2010, and are be submitted to Professor Rainer Silbereisen, President of the Union at sii@uni-jena.de. Nominations materials include a nominations form, a CV, endorsement from an IUPsyS National Member, and recommendations from two individuals.

The Executive Committee will make a recommendation for Deputy Secretary-General to the 2010 Assembly for ratification. The next Deputy Secretary-General's 2-year term will commence at the conclusion of the 2010 Assembly and conclude at the end of the International Congress of Psychology in 2012.

Nominations include the following (with indication of how to label each file for sending as a nomination):

  • A nominations form(save this with filename DSG-nomineename-NOMFORM.pdf)

  • A cover letter to the Executive Committee of the Union addressing the nominee's current activities, suitability for the DS-G position, international experience, other relevant experience, and why this individual would be an asset / good fit for the Union (save this with filename DSG-name-cover.doc or .pdf)

  • A letter of support from a National Member of the Union. Preference is for the National Member in the Nominee's country of residence, but other letters will be accepted (save this with filename DSG-name-NMsupport.doc or .pdf)

  • Two letters of recommendation (save this with filename DSG-name-recommend-recommendername.doc or .pdf). These may be sent separately by recommenders.

  • A current CV for the nominee (save this with filename DSG-name-Vita.doc or .pdf)

Nominations may include additional information deemed relevant to the position of DS-G.
